Set in a future where the world has succumbed to hypercapitalism and is now run by a board of governors, this book tells the story of the man who started it all, and his daughter's journey to understand it.
Like many spec fic books, this explored interesting ideas, but didn't really end up going much of anywhere. In this case, though, I actually didn't mind it as much as I sometimes do. Really, this is four stories, told in alternating chapters and perspectives. It's the story of a boy, growing up on a coconut farm in India. It's the story of a young man who moves to America, and invents a computer that revolutionises how people live. It's the story of a girl who wants to escape the isolated life she has grown up with. And it's the story of a woman, accused of murdering her father, who waits for judgement.
If you go into this expecting anything nearing hard sci-fi, you'll be disappointed. But if you want something that's more about people, and how they interact with each other and think about themselves, this book might be for you.

This was a unique reflection on capitalism, corrupt politics, and society’s learned helplessness. It was executed very well and in a way that kept me very engaged.
