Well heck, I'm crying. That was a unique ghost story. It was a bit of an odd start...but just the right blend of odd that I very much was curious to see where it was heading. And before I knew it, I was invested. It was scary and sweet and a ride.
I loved The Girl with All the Gifts so I expected an exciting well written story with a great plot and likeable characters. However I was left a bit disappointed.
Jess is sent to Fellside a prison on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. She doesn't remember why she is sent there, she doesn't remember what happened all she knows is a boy called Alex has died and she was sentenced for his murder.
It is not really a horror story, sure there's a ghost but it's more about prison corruption and finding out what really happened to poor little Alex (ironically I was serving on jury service at the time of reading this!)
The problem was it didn't really keep my attention There were long gaps between anything happening and overall it didn't grasp me or keep my attention.
The book is set in Yorkshire and is about the criminal justice system. Being a Yorkshire lass myself and someone who works in the criminal justice system, I kept getting annoyed about the errors in both areas.
Overall it was a bit of a let down 3/5.

Jess Moulson is accused of a horrific crime that she has no memory of. After being found guilty, she is sent to Fellside, a women's prison in the Yorkshire moors. While there, she has to battle her demons and the inmates of the prison.
I don't want to say too much about this book, as Carey has written a phenomenal tale that will catch you by surprise in several ways. I will say this, though. If you like supernatural tales, then Fellside is a great read. The writing is superb, and the end, while surprising, was compelling. Check it out.

I really liked this book. Two in a row from MR Carey. Am extremely unique storyline and a great ending. Satisfying and entertaining. One of the twists is a little obvious, but still very satisfying.

I read the first 37 or so chapters. Was miserable, bored out of my mind, and disgusted by the graphic descriptions of violence. A googled synopsis wouldn't tell me how the story ends. Skipped ahead to chapter 95 or so? Got to find out how it ends without feeling lost at all despite jumping through over half the book. The ending was unsatisfactory but predictable, like the rest of the story. Very disappointed in this one, especially since The Girl With All the Gifts was so good.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this one to read from a friend who is a bookseller (and knows how much I loved [b:The Girl with All the Gifts|17235026|The Girl with All the Gifts|M.R. Carey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403033579s/17235026.jpg|23753235]). It took me some time to finish, but mostly because of real life getting in the way.
I don't want to say too much since this isn't officially released yet, but I very much enjoyed it. Carey's writing is some of my favorite, and I think he weaves a wonderful story here. I've read things like "Orange is the New Black meets The Shining" in reviews, but the only thing I know about the first is that it takes place in a women's penitentiary. The setting is the same for this one, that's true. I don't know that I entirely agree with the second reference, though.
The middle of the book had me riveted, and the pace continued to stay pretty steady after that. I pretty much guessed how the end was going to go, so there wasn't much surprise there, but I quite enjoyed the trip overall.

Meh. I agree with all of the readers who loved Girl with All the Gifts. I thought this was a good, not great read but the tidy-up-all-the-loose-ends ending was disappointing. The main character Jess seemed made of steel at some points and a weak-kneed individual at others and most of the characters were just one note. The violence was over done and I was left wondering how any of the characters came out of their beating alive at all.
3.5 stars.
A slow start, but once the story got going I was all in.
