A very satisfying read. I don't have a lot to say about it, but these two notes come to mind:
1) If you come to this from M. R. Carey's previous book [b:The Girl with All the Gifts|17235026|The Girl with All the Gifts|M.R. Carey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403033579s/17235026.jpg|23753235], be aware they are very different kinds of novels. [b:The Girl with All the Gifts|17235026|The Girl with All the Gifts|M.R. Carey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403033579s/17235026.jpg|23753235] is action-packed with a strong emotional core. Fellside is more of a supernatural thriller and a slow, slow, slow burn. Mind you, I think the read is worth it, as the ending is superb and satisfied both my need for action and my desire for justice, but I'm not surprised if others may choose to not finish the work.
2) I understand how the setting (a women's prison in England) reminds folks of Orange is the New Black, but for me, a better touchstone was [b:Hard Time|243080|Hard Time 50 to Life|Steve Gerber|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1173060163s/243080.jpg|235503], the comic book series by [a:Steve Gerber|40988|Steve Gerber|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1427368342p2/40988.jpg] and [a:Brian Hurtt|63767|Brian Hurtt|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] that followed a high school student with strange powers into a maximum security prison. If you liked one of these works, you'll adore the other.

Orange is The New Black meets Insidious.
It is not a bad book, it's just not as good as [b:The Girl With All the Gifts|17235026|The Girl With All the Gifts (The Girl With All the Gifts, #1)|M.R. Carey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1403033579l/17235026._SY75_.jpg|23753235].
I really enjoyed The Girl With All The Gifts, but Fellside feels a bit cheap.
Some parts are too sped up and some too slow, some descriptions are amazing, some are extremely boring.
General impression is just meh.

It has been a while since a book grabbed me like this. It sunk it's teeth and talons into me and didn't let go until the very end.
I used an audible credit to begin reading (because I adored Finty Williams and her reading of "The Girl With All the Gifts) but I ended up getting it for my nook, as well, because I couldn't stop reading it.
Not only did it keep me in its grip, it has left me feeling rather emotionally wrecked. It is supernatural and (almost) entirely believable at the same time.
My heart hurts and my eyes hurt and I'm almost inclined to started it all back over again.

Very original. The second half is better than the first.
I really enjoyed this book. I was a huge fan of "The Girl with the Gifts" so I was interested to read this since it seemed to be very different kind of story. The story is about a drug addict who is convicted of murder when she appears to have set her apartment on fire and inadvertently kills a child living in the upstairs apartment by smoke inhalation. She is sent to a women's prison called Fellside where she decides to die by starving herself. She begins to realize she is not alone and begins to believe that the ghost of the child she killed is there with her and he urges her to find out who really killed him. If the child was already dead she could be cleared of her murder charge. Thus she begins a strange journey of out of body experiences and getting caught up in a drug smuggling operation inside the prison. A very unique story and a wonderful read.
I really liked it, it was creepy and suspenseful but not in a stressful way.
