EpicFest 2023 illustrator Dare Coulter. And the illustrations are AMAZING. (The prose is too, of course: it's Kwame.) But the illustrations! You should check out this book just for those. Half are intricate clay sculptures photographed for illustration.

"How do you tell that story?
About copper dreams wrapped in iron chains.
"How do you tell that story and not want to weep for the world?"
"you do it by being brave enough to lift your voice
by holding history in one hand
and clenching hope in the other."
Ladies and Gentlemen, may this book be remembered come 2023 Youth Media Awards time. Because Kwame Alexander delivers utter brilliance.

Just when you think that The Undefeated is going to be Alexander's greatest masterpiece, he and Coulter produce this tour de force. It's a hard read. It's supposed to be a hard read. It's probably as raw and unflinching an account of slavery as you can put in a book for young children. If you've educated yourself about slavery, then you might not learn anything new, but you may feel it in a way you never have before.
