Book to make you, break you, find you, and reach into your skin, scrape fingers against bone and grab your evasive heart and remind it to stop fleeing the truth it already knows.
Thank you.

i have no desire
for words that float
on water
i want language so thick
it will drown me with it.

----------
but what if you get dark
is to say that dark bodies don’t let light in
is to say that there is something dirty
about the biological makeup of skin
is to say that some people are born clean
and need to keep it that way
is to say that you don’t hate black people
but you thank god you weren’t born one.

----------
think about it
i am told to stop
thinking so much
and i wonder why
it is that in order to
survive in this world
i must not use
my mind.

----------
i’ve tried boarding up the windows
with deep breathing and changing
all the locks on my thoughts but
when anxiety moves into my body
i am pushed out onto the street
with nothing but a box of crushed
courage and a few flimsy distractions
to hold me over until she decides it is
time to leave.

----------
how often were we tuned
to entirely different frequencies
while we claimed to hear
each other’s words?
our minds have always
slipped past one another
just close enough to graze
and catch nothing more
than static.

I wish half stars were possible because this is a solid three and a half. The book is divided into 6 parts, and while I personally loved the section entitled Muscle, and Skin and Light were strong contenders, the others couldn't hold up to it's prowess. Kaur definitely has moment of heart-wrenching reality and thought-provoking brilliance, but there are also large chunks of poems and prose that are lacking. I especially wasn't fond of the prose / short stories.

If you've read Nikita Gill or Rupi Kaur and are looking for something to read next, this is a good choice, but doesn't reach *quite* the same level of mastery.

Beautifully enchanting, and often painful to read. One that I hope to revisit in the future.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book and chose to review it. This in no way impacts my opinion.

I absolutely loved this. It had such a good mix of poetry that spoke from the heart of someone who wanted to be heard as a person and as an immigrant. I loved the mix between the poetry, illustrations, and prose. I feel like I will get more out of this each time I read it.

When You Ask

I have come to realize that I enjoy books in verse that share a more linear story. I do not get as engaged in books that are verse/poetry where it does not follow a direct story path. There were parts of this book that were deeply powerful and parts where I felt - huh?
