Ray and One-Eye are quite frankly, two peas from the same pod. Both outcasts of society. Utterly consumed by fear, anxiety, longing and loneliness. It’s no wonder really, that they were drawn together.
“Sometimes I see the sadness in you, the same sadness that’s in me. It’s in the way you sigh and stare and hang your head. It’s in the way you never wholly let your guard down and take the world I’ve given you for granted…”
Baume beautifully observes -and vividly evokes, the aimlessness of their nomadic travels and lifestyle. Full of pensive -yet poetic writing, highlighting the melancholic bleakness of the Irish countryside and the loneliness and isolation of life “on the road”.

One of those close first-person confessional narratives that seems to be all the rage right now - see also: [b:Dear Thief|21535682|Dear Thief|Samantha Harvey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1408469852s/21535682.jpg|39902137] and [b:A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing|18218630|A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing|Eimear McBride|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1374386236s/18218630.jpg|25647879]. The style may be voguish but all these books feel to me like they were projects in a Creative Writing MA. Conspicuously pretty writing but not much happens.
What a sad and beautiful book. An amazing blend of melancholy and sentimentality.
This is a very sweet story about a lonely man and his dog. Be forewarned that some bits are very sad. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was wonderful.

I read this entire book over a 6 hour train ride. As most people can attest to it has beautiful writing, felt like a big long poem of sorts.
While we only really had the main character (Ray, who is unnamed in the book) I didn't particularly find myself needing dialogue or too much interaction with other characters. The way it is written fleshes out his character, and his life, incredibly well.
Definitely not a happy dog book, do not read this if you want a happy dog book.

Graphic: Death of parent
Moderate: Suicide, Car accident, Alcohol
Beautifully written, dread-inducing. Not a book I'll easily forget.
Well, technically I only read to pg 187 (out of 274), but it was due at the library.
