★★★★☆ (4,5/5)

Thrilling & easy read

I went into this book with a wild theory after just one chapter. I even posted about it…

Now, before I go any further: spoilers ahead. If you haven’t read this yet and don’t want anything ruined…this is your warning.

Suffice to say, my theory was wrong. Wah wah wah. It was still a damn good theory though!

I DID started catching on about 10 chapters in that we were dealing with an unreliable narrator. The signs started stacking: the diary entries, the weird tension around Christian possibly not even being her real therapist, and then Theo—our charming little narrator—starts unraveling. First emotionally, then mentally. He starts talking about his wife cheating, and the cracks really begin to show.

And then there was the way he interacted with her brother in law, and the weird wedding ring reference making her suddenly snap out of her mute state. Then when she OD’d he just immediately knew where to look for the injection site to advise Christian.

Even knowing all of that, I was still caught off guard when he went to confront his wife’s lover’s wife, and the door opens, and he says: “That was the first time I met Alicia.”

Y’ALL. My brain stopped. I was floored. I looked at my dog in shock. I knew he was twisting things, but I didn’t realize how much the timeline was messing with me. He talked about past events in present tense, and that subtle shift kept me from putting the full picture together. It was clever. It worked. And it hit.

So why not five stars?

Well—because I did catch on early that Theo wasn’t the reliable guide he seemed to be. I’ve read and watched enough stories with unreliable narrators to spot those signs pretty fast, and once I did, the tension dropped just a little. It was still well-executed, don’t get me wrong, but I had to deduct a point for that clarity.

That said? I love an unreliable narrator. It’s one of my favorite devices, and this one was handled beautifully—layered, psychological, disturbing in all the right ways.

So: 4 out of 5 stars. Smart, twisty, dark—and absolutely worth reading.

Loooove an unreliable narrator and when an author plays around with timeline. Super good read.
