I have to thank Virginia Woolf and in particular this book for opening my eyes to many things and bringing me closer to the concept of feminism. I admit that after reading it, it became my favorite book ever!

ci manchi Virginia

Alcott writes in a story that ‘all the philosophy in our house is not in the study, a good deal is in the kitchen, where a fine old lady thinks thoughts and does kind deeds while she cooks and scrubs.’ What can be said of philosophy by Alcott is also implied by Woolf about fiction. The concept of intellectual freedom is an inherently gendered issue - the privilege to sit and think, and only think, is a privilege hard-won. Coexisting in the intellectual realm and the one of domestic responsibility forms the crux of Woolf’s argument, as she takes us through a meandering narrative that flits between the real and the metaphysical, musing on the idea of ‘women and fiction’ while being occasionally pulled back into reality by the reminder that she is physically trespassing in a male-dominated environment. Excellently written and strikingly modern.
