Whelp, this book is better than the last one, so there's that at least. But I really don't know what to make of it.
Artemis Fowl's mental health has taken a nose-dive, coming down with the Atlantis Complex, a psychological disorder that seems to be a mix of paranoid schizophrenia, OCD, and DID. It is a well-known psychological disorder that affects fairy criminals that are suffering a lot of guilt. The villain is, thankfully, not who I was expecting it to be (which means that she'll probably be the villain for the final book, siiiggghhhh), and he had the potential to be an interesting and nuanced villain except for the wholebrainwashing his wife thing, which makes his motives of trying to save her life less sympathetic and more "well, at least if she dies she'll be escaping this man who's held her in thrall for the last 80 years."
I'm excited for the next book, both because I'm genuinely looking forward to it after a friend of mine assured me that the ending is worth the mediocre books (I hope her opinion wasn't clouded by nostalgia goggles), and because I've been reading this series for like, two years now and I am so glad to have it done with.

*sigh* So this one is...a little rough. All the other ones before this has had a fast pace and feeling of wonder that kept them going but this one just felt, stale? Like, Artemis developing a mental illness is a cool concept but in execution it feels kind of thrown in and just weird and then the villain feels almost like an after thought which really sucks because I liked how he was a sympathetic bad guy! not only this but at this point Mulch has just become annoyingly obsessive about food, in fact, all of the characters besides maybe Holly sound like their normal selves.
Overall, I just hope the last book can pull me out of the rut that these last two have put me in with this series :(
(Though I have heard that the ending leaves a lot to be desired).

the magical mental illness was pretty ham-fisted and cure-centric. could have been handled worse, but could have been handled much, much better.
appreciatedorion and artemis's distinctness being used as a meaningful plot point rather than just the butt of a joke.
edit: unfortunately, having now finished the 8th book it only further damns the 7th, asthe Atlantis complex is only briefly brought up, and artemis is 'cured' without lasting consequence by going to therapy.
appreciated
