What a great story. His treatment of injustice and political unrest feels relevant today.
challenging dark slow-paced

The story of a man who leaves France to escape his family and returns there only to be sentenced to the gallows. A well-written love story and historical novel. I loved the ending, though it was easily predicted.
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this book so much as I found David Copperfield to be laborious reading.

I was so confused for 60% of this book as there were so many characters and it was a convoluted plot line, but the last 150 pages really made up for it. All the emotion and twists brought the story home after a long build up. I can see why it is a true classic, and the ending made me feel quite sad. Dickens clearly has a viewpoint on the craziness that was the French Revolution, and I appreciate that it was focused on one family and what they suffered through that time without too much focus on the main characters in history.

Dickens is a wordy fellow, but once you get into the groove and to the meat of the story, it absolutely sings.
