It was wasted on me at school, but I have finally returned to this book, having loved so many others by Dickens as an adult. Beginning and ending with some of literature’s most well known sentences, it is the story of the French Revolution, told though the connections of one family. It is dark, and violent, as it must be, and though it has far fewer ridiculously named characters than I expect from Dickens, the characters are deeply endearing. It is about social justice, love, loyalty, sacrifice, and redemption, and points so beautifully to the hope of the Great Story. There were tears. I listened to the audiobook, skilfully and movingly read by Anton Lesser.

شدیدا‌ً بین ۲ ستاره و ۳ ستاره درگیرم.
داستان ایرادات بی‌نهایت زیادی داشت و ابداً به من این حس رو نداد که با یک شاهکار ادبی طرفم.
قلم دیکنز بعضی جاها اذیت کننده بود و مدل روایتش عصبیم میکرد. تا حدود ۸۰٪ کتاب، داستان برای من جذابیتی نداشت و خیلی طول کشید تا اون کانکشنی که انتظار میرفت بین کرکترها به وجود بیاد. فی الواقع دو ستاره‌ای هم که دادم بیشتر برای ۲۰٪ پایانی کتابه نه اوایلش.
شخصیت پردازی نسبتاً قابل قبول بود. تنها کرکتری که (تا حدودی) برای من جذابیت داشت سیدنی بود که معتقدم پتانسیلش رو در داستان حیف کرد.

به طور کلی در ژانر کلاسیک و این مدل روایت به خصوص (که داستان چندین خانواده رو دنبال میکنه) کارهای خیلی قویتری وجود دارن.
درسته که شخصاً با اتفاقاتی که پیش اومد تو زاویه‌م، اما این کتاب یکی از بارزترین مثال‌های جمله “things we do for love” بود.

I went in very hesitantly. Thinking it would be a slog to get through. Don't ask me why. It immediately pulled me in and I enjoyed it all the way through.
