This was a reread, I guess I have read it quite a few times over the years but not for a while now.
I think this is my second favourite Dickens. Great Expectations for sentimental reasons is first, this second. I have come to like it more and more.
It does win the prize if the beat first AND last sentences.
Anyway, that’s it for now. I just love this book.

sydney was so, so important to me when i was a depressed 12 year old. now, i find this book just doesn't hit as much- now, i wonder if the reason i loved sydney was because i wanted my death to matter like his; after all, life didn't feel worth living. now, i pity him, like i pity myself. i wish he didn't have to die so someone better than him might live. i wish he could live through his redemption.

to be honest—I read this for school. I’m not a classic girlie (ok mostly just not classics written by men) but this ended up being one of my favorite reads of the year. Charles dickens managed to write a novel with intrigue, meaningful quotes, and relatively good mental illness representation for the time (I will forever be a Sydney carton fan). it’s a beautiful story about how a British family becomes intertwined with the events of the French Revolution, and it has ALL the necessary elements for a great novel—revenge, revolution, and romance. off-topic, or on topic, Sydney carton would definitely relate to the archer by Taylor swift. Anyways, love this book go read it! ALSO have any bookish swifties ever thought that the line “echoes of your footsteps on the stairs” from delicate is a reference to tale of two cities—I know the first line of getaway car is a play on the first line of tale of two cities, so it seems plausible. it would be like Taylor saying that she feels him becoming a part of her future, like how the echoes of the footsteps in the book are the signs of danger coming into the lives of Mannetts?

pushed through and finished this book but it really wasn’t my kind of vibe

the book was way to boring for me but when i went on to spark notes and read the "translated" version it broke down the story for me and revealed what an excellent plot the story actually has. so, i would recommend getting the no fear version of this book to help break it down so it's enjoyable to read, but if you can understand this old english style of writing that read away!

If possible, I think this book is even more impactful on a second reading. It definitely holds a place in my top favorite books of all time.

It takes some patience, but when you finally get to the point where you can see all the strings Dickens has been holding weaving themselves together, the payoff is incredible. An absolute masterpiece.

great book, just wish I could have read it faster. I really appreciated the ending.
