Charming and cute - I somehow missed reading this and my youth. Like the title implies this story is about a cricket who ends up in New York City after getting stuck in a picnic basket. A young boy who works at his family's newsstand has never seen a cricket before and rescues a scared and confused Chester Cricket. Chester starts to live a comfortable life at the newsstand and becomes friends with a mouse and a cat. Together the trio get into mischief and discover that Chester is very talented at making music. Soon big crowds begin to go to the newsstand to see cricket who can play symphonies and other musical acts. But what if fame isn't what Chester wants? A sweet story for young readers - a play on the country mouse/ city mouse trope. Lots of fun!

Not really a fan of books with talking animals, so I was reluctant to read this but I actually ensued it. Read it to my fifth grade son and he isn't a fan of books aren't realistic, but he did like this one. We found ourselves looking up music mentioned in the book on You Tube. We were introduced to classical music, Opera and religious hymns all thanks to a little cricket.

Bedtime story for the kids: they really liked this one. I thought the ending was kind of sad and rushed, but everyone else seemed to like it, so maybe that's just me.

A really sweet and fun story of a country cricket coming to the big city. I liked how the animals could understand the humans perfectly, but didn't decide to make animals capable of human speech.

It was hard to not come to care for the different characters and to become invested in their story. I'm definitely interested to see how their story continues in the next book.

I've been meaning to read this book since probably third grade and I finally got around to it at age 26. I think I definitely would have enjoyed it more when I was 8, but it was well-written and magical even as an adult. I don't have much interest in the rest of the series, but I think this one works well as a standalone.

This children's novel was so cute. I couldn't get enough. By the end of this short book you have fallen in love with a cricket, a mouse and a cat. All of these animals have some characteristic that makes you love them so much. By the end you are sad yet happy for the characters and I think that is the best ending we are ever going to get.

This book is very sweet. Descriptive images and moments from the story have stayed with me.
