I decided to give it a try, and it picked up where the first book ended. I lost interest halfway through. This series wasn’t really something I liked and won’t be continuing.

Sucks you in

Ending leaves you on edge since it has no full ending. Leaves you questioning what will happen to all the characters.

The sequel to Binti is even more grounded in a Butler-esque afro-futurism, as the protagonist finds herself asking what it means to be human (and more specifically “Himba”) in the face of constantly changing cultural and biological conditions. Binti’s return home is even more compelling, imo, than her journey to space depicted in the first book—we see her wrestling against the patriarchal, classist, racist values of her hometown and family, and learning more about her ancestry and roots. In this novella, “home” may not reference a place or set of relationships but rather an orientation towards unlearning and decolonization. There are also some rich explorations of ‘mental health/mental illness’ and I think the book ultimately calls for a ‘mad’ orientation to subjectivity—it’s not about mastery, cure, or control but finding out new ways of coexistence. Again, I’m amazed at how much richness she packs into such a short little series. Can’t wait for the third and final book!

This was such a good sequel to Binti! I loved learning more about Binti's family and culture. I still feel as if the world building is Iacking a bit but this series is still absolutely amazing. Highly recommend!
