3.5 stars. Found the medical anecdotes fascinating and often heartbreaking and wish there had been more of that and less about the author’s personal life.

Was gifted this book from a friend and although I'm not a huge memoir person, Dr. Harper has a very beautiful and straightforward writing style that was very easy to read.

I loved this book! The writing pulled me in and the message kept me there.

I loved this book Dr. Michele Harper is so real, raw, and relatable. She is a strong black woman I would love to meet.

This book had a good message, but for me the writing just wasn’t up to par. If you are looking to read an excellent medical memoir I would recommend Atul Gawande.

I started out really enjoying this but unfortunately my interest withered as it went on. The dialogue seemed extremely forced and as if it was fitting a narrative. Harper is definitely brilliant, but the storytelling just wasn’t there. The patient stories were gripping at points, however I was finding myself skimming the lesson that was learned (it seemed every lesson was the same). There were some stories that were much stronger than others. It was incredible to read about how she stood up for herself and the Black man who was being forced to get X-rays against his own will by two White cops. However, she flipped back with personal and medical stories and in my opinion, didn’t tell either with enough detail.

I finished this a few weeks ago, and I still find myself thinking about it. It’s such a beautifully written book that weaves together the personal and professional in a remarkably seamless manner. I’m absolutely blown away. By her writing, her determination, her fortitude in the face of blatant disrespect and bias, her commitment to and respect for her patients. All of it. Everything she lays bare here.

I don't usually leave a written review, but I felt like the author of this book was really blind to the fact that her mother was also a victim. Maybe it made her own situation easier to deal with, but her mom was probably terrified and struggling. The cop boyfriend in the end of the book was clearly abusive too, going to go out on a limb and say that's why his ex was so "unhinged". It was an interesting enough read but I don't know that I'd specifically recommend it to others.

Very good read. Loved the story and flow. Very inspiring and insightful and reminded me to take my time in my own journey and changes throughout life
