Wasn't for me. Lots of characters and overlapping plots made it hard to follow

I enjoyed this. It’s well written and the characters are great, but I had trouble really getting into it.

I liked reading vignettes. Some parts were slower than others.

Ray Carney is now middle aged, we get to see how he manages life between the worlds of being an upright, straight businessman who dips his toe back into the crooked life. We get to know some of his associates a little more when the story weaves theirs into the main frame. Nice extension of the first book.

Still good but not as great as the first one. I grew up in Manhattan in the 1970s so it was a little bit painful to read about how the city was going downhill and how politicians were scamming off the city's misfortunes, the danger and violence that was like a fog everywhere, not just Harlem. I would have liked it better if we'd stayed closer to Carney, the protagonist, as we did in the first book.
