Eh some good points...but didn’t necessarily care for how it was written. More easy to understand the depth if you read a new section a day and focus on the points in that section, rather than as a book.

She obviously had many blessings in her life, and should think that some others aren’t that lucky. But some of the points are honest and true.

Neither good or bad for me...just, eh.

Type of read: Commuter (listened to and from work)

What made me pick it up: Saw it in one of the 'recommended for you' lists I receive.

Overall rating: I wanted to like 'Present Over Perfect' more than I did. While there were some good nuggets of insight, it was buried in repetitive writing, out of reach attempts at connection with the reader, and prayer. Don't get me wrong, there were parts of this book where I straight up felt seen. As if Niequist was talking right to me, knowing my struggles. I have a few quotes and affirmations written down that I know will stick with me. However, especially toward the back half of the book, it seemed like there was a page count to fill and repurposing of ideas to stretch the book out as long as she could.

Readers Note: I added this book to my TBR list from one of the 'recommended for you' lists I receive. while I liked the book, I had no knowledge of the author or underlying genres present in the book (which is completely on me). This book has A LOT of Jesus. As someone who was raised Missouri Synod Lutheran who currently has the mentality of 'I love Jesus and I know I need Jesus but I can't stand being in a building of fake Christians and overplayed contemporary Christian rock,' I didn't find it to be too overwhelming but it is definitely woven throughout the whole book.

Friends and strangers have given this 5 stars and I thought it would be a book that would meet me where I'm at. unfortunately it wasn't for me. After finally getting just over half way through a couple weeks in I'm putting it down. I used to think I need to finish a book of I start it... even if I'm bored out of my tree but I'm a an age where I don't have time for that. I found this to dry and boring to carry on. It clearly spoke to many ppl but I'm not one of them.

Ugh. This was recommended to me as a book for our mom book club, and I don’t want to subject anyone else to this book. I read to around page 130 (50%) then skimmed the rest.

As other reviews have mentioned, this is a diary/blog post-like style - the chapters are as short as 2 pages, the topics are all wildly all over the place, and everything is about the author. This is a memoir - not a self-help book, not a book of advice, nada. I don’t care for her writing style and choppy chapters.

Her theology as a Christian is extremely flawed, and as a follower of Christ, why would I look to her as an example when halfway through the book she even admitted that she never even prayed to Jesus. I skimmed the second half of the book, and even by the end she talks about how awkward it is to accept that she has direct access to Jesus. This woman has supposedly built her career on writing books targeted at Christian women and attending Christian events. She keeps repeating that Christian women are taught to bend over backwards, ignore their own bodies and need for rest, and to just push push push. I think she needs to reread Proverbs 31 and the story of Mary and Martha. Seems like we’ve got a Martha on our hands.

This was my first and last read from her, as I can’t put myself through anymore of her writing.
