This was a nice addition to the series because we get Maddox's history and more about the friendship he had with Reggie, but the humour was missing for me and I struggled to be interested in the plot. I didn't particularly care about the fates of all the side character victims and the reveal of who was behind it felt kind of anti-climactic.
I do have a hit and miss history with Alice Winters - some books I love, but others just fall a bit flat and unfortunately this was one of them.

I will never find a moment of peace with this series as I'm too busy spending every moment absolutely terrified that one of my ghostly found family will pass on.

I’m so sad to DNF this as I adored the previous books but this one just fell flat for me :( it seemed so impersonal and rushed maybe? The plot holes were pretty glaring and the fact everyone spoke perfect English in Japan just annoyed me because like cmon??
It all starts with a plane ride! I was, as usual with all of Alice's characters that you get to know so intimately throughout a series like this, laughing from page one. It does not even take getting to Japan for Hiro and Maddox to get involved with some ghosts. I can say I never thought I would be laughing so much at a bunch of ghost characters. There is the small serious tone of Hiro meeting this part of his family but that is beautifully balanced with the mystery they get involved with for his cousin. It was a fun trip to Japan for me! I am feeling romantic vibes coming for Nicolas!
