The Bluff by Devney Perry is a heartfelt return to the town of Calamity, Montana, to read Everly and Hux’s story. This grumpy vs. sunshine romance pulls you in with its genuine emotions and romantic tension. Everly isn’t without her own struggles, and it’s refreshing to see her strength as she works through her trauma. Hux, the gruff and reserved hero, complements her perfectly, and their dynamic creates an undeniable chemistry. The way their relationship unfolds and deepens is truly beautiful. A perfect read for fans of emotional, character-driven stories with a satisfying romance.
This is the second book of the small-town drama series that takes place in Calamity Montana.
Grumpy town recluse marries his beneficial friend in hopes of acquiring custody of his teenage daughter.
Hux is our grumpy MMC, who is a painter and owns his own gallery in town. His ex-wife won't let him see or be around his daughter, Savannah, so they tend to hang out in the shadows. Hux is like the town mystery. He doesn't let anyone get to know him, and he doesn't really make any appearances in town either. He has a colorful past that is kind of holding him down.
Everly is so spunky and fun. Even after the stalker incident and the way her parents treated her. It's a wonder that she has any smiles left. The way that she made herself available to help Hux with his custody battle over Savannah was so sweet. She didn't have to.
The way Hux didn't trust Everly was so sad to me. I get his weariness about a stranger, but trust your gut.
I enjoyed the mystery over the gallery with the missing paintings & missing money. It was fun to listen as it unfolded.
The custody battle over Savannah really made me sad. The way Savannah's mom, April, used Hux's history against HIM and her own daughter was obnoxious. I wanted to strangle that woman.
I was wondering during the whole book why Everly agreed to marry Hux, like how is this convenient for her? When her reasoning came out, I was SHOOKETH. Like, girl, seriously!?

i love a marriage of convenience but idk about this - i did like it and i love angst but i think was just expecting more? when she falls first as well i just …. wanna SCREAM and Everly was such a bad bitch she didn’t need to crumble over a man
anyway. i did love certain parts of the book and it worked but i feel like it was everyone vs Everly like why did they hate her for no reason. and Hux did NOTHING FR.
ok bye

Overall Rating- 5⭐️
Spice- 🌶️🌶️
Plot- smooth like butta
Trigger warnings- custody battle, friends betrayal
Tropes- grumpy/sunshine, fake marriage of convenience, forced proximity
Hux is the grumpiest of book boyfriends but he is everything. Everly pulled him right out of his shell and showed him he too was worthy of love after making a mistake in his younger years that led him to prison. The banter between these two sucked me in from the beginning. Everly isn’t afraid to call it like it is and not take Hux’s grumpy bluntness to heart. She stood by him as his fake wife through so many ups and downs with his daughter’s custody battle and his best friend’s betrayal all while putting herself on the back burner. I loved the growth this relationship took and I didn’t want this book to end. I could keep reading about them. Hopefully we see glimpses in the next book.
