A man is framed and calls on Reacher to help. In this one Lee Child shows all the investigative skills Reacher would have needed as an M. P. in the Army. Gotta love Reacher!
Decent book. The movie really does not parallel the book.
Θα έπρεπε να απαγορέψουν δια νόμου την κυκλοφορία βιβλίων με τον Τζακ Ρίτσερ. Κάτι σαν την πρέζα ένα πράμα...
I really enjoyed this book - it's the first Jack Reacher novel I've read and, even though I'm a fast reader, this book took me a while to get through. Not because the plot was slow or boring...it made me want to slow down and read it carefully so I wouldn't miss any details.
EVERY DAY IS A WINDING ROAD
But really. That was one of the most random things to have to include in this story. But if you're reading a Lee Child book, it's probably not because of the outstanding literature aspect. Actual quote from this book "Reacher looked at the TV. One team was winning. One team was losing." I can't make this up...Actually, I could, but then I would delete it for something a little more sophisticated.
To put it this way, I listened to this book with my boyfriend on a road trip. He fell asleep for an entire CD (about an hour of audio) and when he woke back up he asked what he had missed and I honestly couldn't tell him more than, "They went back and forth, couldn't catch Reacher, that's about it." I told him a little bit more and tried to fill in details, but really all I could truly say was "A whole lot of nothing" and that basically sums up this story. It could have been about 200 pages shorter, but the details of this story just bulked it up for the hell of it, not because it was totally important for the plot.
This wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't the best. It kept me awake during the 12 hours of driving, so it served its purpose.

Interesting thing occurred, I really enjoyed the movie, REALLYlovwd the book. They could NEVER make the book, for it wouldn't have happened that way visually. Pacing would be off and you cannot that in the visual medium.
I really enjoyed this book. It is cliche and cringy at points (mostly with the dialogue), but for what it is meant to be, it works well and fits it's purpose. Childs manages to build up tension and anticipation and I do love a good murder mystery.
Biggest issue I have is that Reacher seems to be absolutely amazing at everything he does and portrayed as almost superhuman (without actually being superhuman). I do take into consideration though that this is the only Reacher book I have read so I may have missed flaws or him being rubbish at something in the previous 8 books.

One Shot
By Lee Child
9.2/10
One Shot was published in 2005 and my personal copy clocks in at 495 pages.
“Reacher checked into a downtown hotel called the Metropole Palace, two blocks east of First Street […] He paid cash upfront for one night only and used the name Jimmy Reese. He had cycled through the presidents and vice presidents long ago and was now using second basemen from the Yankees’ non-championship years.”
One Shot is Jack Reacher book nine and still I haven’t grown tired of Lee Child’s exceptional action hero. I use the Jack Reacher novels as palate cleansers between larger or more complex books, they help me get back into the flow of reading if fatigue hits me and they work every single time. I haven’t read a single JR book I haven’t loved. Of course you could say that they’re formulaic, that they’re cookie cutter novels with the same basic structure but a different story every time and maybe you’d be right, but they’re still fantastic thrillers in their own right and I really can’t get enough of the character. Jack Reacher is a bit of a vagabond, an ex-military cop who wanders the USA seeing sights and meeting people, but trouble always seems to find him- a little like John McClane from Die Hard. Reacher is a modest tough guy who isn’t just brawn, he can outsmart the best of them which is why I think he’s such an interesting character. One Shot is the story of a mass shooting and an investigation into the past of an ex-sniper which will bring back bad memories for Jack which he’d almost certainly prefer to stay buried.

I like Lee Child's Jack Reacher character. I've read them all. Although a series... it's not necessary to read them in order. Just have fun with them. All are easy reads and entertaining.
I'm excited to see how Tom Cruise portrays the Reacher role in the upcoming film slated to premiere in December (2012). I'm not a big Cruise fan... but... his character in Tropic Thunder was great; not too mention the MI franchise.
