This book took hold of me & didn’t let go until I arrived at the acknowledgments. Happy AAPI month! Let’s keep writing AAPI characters who are courageous fools, who are fallible and loving, who reflect the truest parts of our community with pride and honor.
“I summoned every ember of strength I had. If always had a strong will, but a strong heart?… all of it, I had overcome. ‘And this too, I will overcome,’ I whispered into the mountain.”

Oh I love a good fairytale retelling! Upon reflection I can’t believe how many there were. It’s also kinda neat reading this knowing that there’s the sequel, prequel AND. Another related book that just came out.
I’m honestly glad I waited to properly read the series instead of just going straight to forgery of fate. I think I’ll enjoy it more.
This book was such a fun growth of shiori and the world and magic was excellent! I was hoping takkan would be a friend but now it’s a little iffy?? Loved the characters. Might have to get physical copies

It's been a while since I've read a YA and I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I trusted my intuition and what a joy! I read the book almost in one sitting, hooked on the story of Shiori and her brothers. The plot is full of beautiful scenery, delicious food (omg), hardships, challenges and lessons. With flawed, but not unlovable characters. Every time I picked up the book to continue reading I immediately entered its world, so, it is ideal to disconnect from our own. Looking forward to reading the second one!
The book is just as pretty as the cover. "A beautiful and immersive YA fantasy retelling of the Grimm brothers' The Six Swans fairytale, set in an East-Asian inspired world." The mix of legends and magic was great and the characters were all well-developed. The main character, Shiori, is a feisty, rebellious girl who hides cake in her sleeves to eat when she's stressed. Very relatable content. Her best friend is a paper crane she brought to life and she develops interesting relationships with a dragon boy and a prince she was grudgingly betrothed to who turned out to be a great dude. The sequel will focus more on the dragon realm which should be cool.
