I loved this. I haven't read anything else in the series, and didn't even realize this was a prequel until about halfway through while updating the page count. The world is deeply fleshed out, as are the characters. The rules of the fantasy world are explained as they become relevant, and nothing feels out of place. My only gripe is that Shori's brothers aren't given very much page time for the reader to get to know them (six characters that are distinct, but glossed over), but this is minimal considering how much happens throughout.
The strength of Six Crimson Cranes makes me want to read the other stories in the series, and I can't wait for the next one.

Loved this book, it was a unique, original and beautiful retelling of The Six Swans. Six Crimson Cranes surprised me with how intricate the plot and writing was, along with how easily the characters became dear to me, even Raikama. This is a Must Read.

ALSO THE PLATONIC LOVE IN THIS BOOK!! the love between shiori and her brothers (and later raikama) is incredible!!!

That girl was away forever! But the twists and turns were delightful.
