The German Wife

Kelly Rimmer

4.33 AVERAGE

Told in alternating timeframes by alternating characters, this story is gripping. Two women, one in the city of Berlin, the other on a farm in Texas, the men and their jobs and their families in the 1930s and the 40s and the 50s. It is about decisions and assumptions and choices and how they affect us and the relationships we form.

I love Kelly Rimmer and her books. As always, her writing is immersive and you don’t want to put the book down.
I just have a really hard time with the ending of this book. She even talks about it in the afterword. I didn’t want Sophie and Juergen to have a happy ending. But, I suppose to keep to the history she couldn’t try them for war crimes. I do absolutely LOVE that she had Izzy as a character that didn’t want romance or a partner or children. Izzy just wanted to do Izzy and I haven’t met a character like her before..

This is one of the better books I’ve read on a whim from browsing Kindle recommendations or freebies. My father works with rockets, so the teaser caught my attention for that reason. I greatly enjoyed the pace and prose.

This was such a powerful story!  A thought-provoking masterpiece!!!!  I loved the perspective written here.  Living through the radicalization of Hitler Germany!  It's hard to comprehend the atrocities that occurred during WWII from an Americanized viewpoint because it was so diabolical!  But I loved this story because it came from the non radicalized viewpoint for a family just trying to survive through it, too. Witness to the events occurring around and to their family. It's a perspective you don't hear about.  I think this story is so well written because not everyone is so prejudiced, and it pushes thought-provoking points about prejudices that occur everywhere!  I cried with the German wife.  I felt their fear and pain of what was happening to them throughout the book, cried and cheered at the small feats of love and family.  I 100% recommend this book!

Great book, vey page turning, didn't really like Lizzie's character development - felt a bit disjointed but really liked Sophie's story.

Really good thinking on morality and what you would do in the situation, makes it evident how hard decisions would be in Germany during ww2
