3.5! A thought provoking read for sure. Even though Sophie and Lizzie grew up so differently, similarities are drawn in that they will do whatever it takes to protect their family… And yet one is a likable character, and the other is extremely unlikable. But does Sophie deserve understanding and empathy? Idk
Things are seldom as simple as they seem.
The German Wife is told from multiple perspectives, alternating from the 1930's to the 1950's and focuses on two women - Sofie, the wife of a German rocket scientist and Lizzie, the farm girl turned wife of an American rocket scientist.
Both will do nearly anything to help and protected their loved ones and sometimes despite that, they can be lost anyway.
I found this novel very thought-provoking and well written.

An unflinching and complicated story that makes us examine the lengths we'll go to - and what we're willing to compromise - to survive and to protect the ones we love. Rimmer skillfully creates characters that are flawed and make questionable choices, but also makes the reader ask themselves what they'd do in the same situation. In an era that we often regard as black and white, right and wrong, THE GERMAN WIFE adds layers of what it means to be human, shows us that moral questions are not always absolute, and offers a warmth and compassion to two women who have fought their own war to save their family. Brilliantly executed and utterly thought-provoking, this gets five stars.
I’d give it 3.5 stars. Parts were very interesting, and others were super slow. It was just ok for me.

Ow. It's a little hard to not feel devastated.
How do you choose what is right when every option will hurt you or your family? When you give your all for someone, but lose yourself, is it worth it? Are there mistakes you can't come back from even if given the chance?
There is a lot to grapple with in this story. I did learn new details about WWII and the Great Depression/Dust Bowl that are not touched on in other WWII novels I've read.
Overall it felt real. Real people living through crisis after crisis, and each day determining what lines could be redrawn and which could not be crossed.
