Always good. I never have to worry when picking up a Kelly Rimmer book. This tells the story of a Sophie, a German wife. It takes place both before/approaching/during WWII, as well as years later when her family has moved to the US. It provides a unique perspective I haven't read before - a German family who did not agree with Hitler's direction, but had to covertly follow along to avoid their own imprisonment or threats to themselves and their children. Once they survived the war and have moved to the states, they must navigate the mistrust and hate they receive from Americans.
Rimmer also pro ides perspectives of the Americans having difficulty welcoming Germans. One example is a former soldier, his sister who cares for him and blames the war and Grrmany in particular. You can see how each perspective is a reality for that person and how this creates hate and mistrust amongst those who may have been friends in other circumstances.

This was definitely one of the better WWII historical fiction novels that I've read. Set in a dual time line of the 1930's and 1950"s the novel chronicles two women, Lizzie, a Texan and Sofie, a German. It tells the story of their younger lives, particularly Lizzie and the effect that WWII, particularly Sofie and how it shaped the women they beecome and how their lives eventually intersect in the early days of the space program in Huntsville, Al. So good. Really makes you think about all of the complexities and nuances to every individual decision that everyone was making during the rise of the third reich. What is being brave, is bending with the wind actually breaking, what is the different between secret resistance and complicit compliance. Should you feel sympathetic a nazi that was “forced” to run a camp. What stories and memories of their involvement have they maybe sugar coated? But also what Lizzie’s brother was doing wasn’t right. Side note Lizzie is a Lezzi right? There was a lot of time line jumping going on and time passing but it was pretty easy to follow. Lizzie was infuriating at times but I also really understood and a supported her decisions too. Did Sofia and her family suffer enough or should they have had a higher price to pay. So many good conflicting questions and emotions through the book. Super captivating and great writing!!!

A beautiful and challenging work of ART. One of my favorite books I have EVER read. The author thoughtfully balances two perspectives and masterfully humanizes their choices and moral dilemmas. I will be reflecting on the main characters Sophie and Lizzie for a long time. I listened to this book and loved the different accents, but I am sure it would be just as astounding reading print as well.
