This was a reread for me and the first book I read of rainbow rowell’s that made me love her and her writing. The characters are relatable and real, the stories are always simple but moving, and the romances are always sweet and beautifully done. Absolutely a forever favorite ❤️

Read for the pioneer book challenge. I thought it was fine. (2 stars = fine) I can see why people love it so much. The family dynamics/stress that Eleanor experiences and the layering of that was probably be best thing done in the book. I didn't love Park and Eleanor's releationship development and how obsessive it felt. I felt sad for Eleanor's mom who is staying in this abusive relationship. And those poor kids who are obviously traumatized. I loved Park's dad and how complex he was, but how he and Park's mom both showed up for Park and Eleanor even if they don't love some choices.

I don't think I'd recommend it to my high school nieces and nephews.

Beautiful. Simple, heartbreaking, real, and just beautiful.

4.5 stars!

Although I feel like the book started out slow it really picked up! It was such a nice story but the end was a tad bit disappointing.

A love story involving two misfits/opposites. Park is nerdy and Korean; Eleanor is the new girl stands out with her red hair and curvacious features.

The story takes place in Nebraska in 1986 and the book is full of all kinds of great 80s details that really pulls the reader back in time. The author was so thorough with her setting, using clothing, media, language etc to make the time period feel authentic.

Theirs is a relationship with so much working against it. Eleanor's home life is rough. Her stepdad is abusive and her family struggles for the basics from food to clothes to privacy.

Park struggles with his Korean heritage and experiments with his image using eyeliner like all the punk rockers of the era, much to his father's dismay.

What makes readers swoon for this love story is the connection the main characters develop through comic books and music and how they truly treasure each moment spent together.

I listened to the audiobook version of this title and I'd highly recommend it. It's not everyday that an audiobook so good it causes you to linger in the car comes along. Recommended for grades 9 and up.
