i was really liking this, but it has a glaring issue that pretty much ruined it in the third act for me; sunny has no character flaws. it is ridiculously annoying, and results in her being the “perfect woman” that teaches poor tortured beckett to change. of course, she never changes, because she is perfectly reasonable and calm and sensible and adjusted and knowledgeable. she’s “terrible in relationships” but it’s not her fault! she’s flighty but she knows who she is at heart! she has absolutely zero internal conflict, and by the end of the book this renders her incredibly, incredibly, boring.

Okay I feel extremely evil giving this 3 stars (honestly maybe 2.75) because I love Kate Canterbury, her writing style, and Friendship, RI so damn much. But I struggled to get through this one. The pace was so slow that I was getting bored. Nothing exciting happens at all - it’s the same stuff page after page, except when something unfortunate happens to Sunny and Beckett comes to save the day. I was so excited to read this, but I wish I had a better review to give.

GODDAMN i need me a beck

I was really hoping to love this one as much as in a Jam. Sadly, the trip back to friendship wasn’t the same.
Beckett is Sunny’s older brother’s best friend and back in the small town to help with his family’s oyster business while his parents are in a legal bind. Sunny owns a cafe and has epilepsy. She’s a little free spirited and can’t stand Beckett because he and her brother lived to torture her.

Now, they have a little rivalry between their businesses.

Their story was not interesting to me until after the 50 % mark. I felt it dragged a bit and had too much going on with the secondary characters. I was glad there wasn’t a true third act break up, however, I just felt nothing was resolved. The parents of Beckett still haven’t had anything solved by the end.

I’m still deciding on a star rating but between 3 and 4 stars. I’m gonna sit on it a bit.

I am well and truly SHUCKED UP after reading this magical book, and so thankful to have been given an ARC! I've sat with my thoughts for a few days, and they are

Thank you Kate for an ARC bc this was such a fun visit back to Friendship, RI!

Sunny and Beckett wasted no time making enemies of each other. It didn't help that there was some history at play and that set them up for frequent headbutting... something everyone but them saw through. 😉

Sunny lived up to her name! She made friends with most everyone she met and we saw her thrive in the small town of Friendship. Seriously, no one there would let anything happen to her and that really spoke to the connections she made. So watch yourself Beckett. 😂 But that's not all. Sunny was also resilient through the difficulties she faced (and there's a hint of suspense in this one so there were def a few). One of them being her chronic illness. Was it her reality? Yes and she didn't shy away from it. But was it her whole existence? Absolutely not. And her friends made sure she had the support she needed to pursue her dreams while also caring for her when her condition needed attention.

Beckett, the grump to Sunny's sunshine. The grumpy is honestly skin deep bc despite his grumblings, he will jump in to take care of everyone he loves without fail. You'd think this means he has everything together. Well, that's not entirely the case and it felt so real to see him stumble. Bc those like him are the ones who need a little extra attention, who crack without anyone noticing. I loved that Sunny *saw* him and gently but firmly forced him to think about what *he* needed.

And can we talk about how fast he fell for Sunny? Something about knots and skirts? 🤷🏻‍♀️😉

I would read Dex's  inner monologue all day. He has the best dry, snarky wit. But their third act breakup was so lame
