Excellent writing - don’t come into this expecting a mystery - it won’t be solved and it’s not really the point of the story imo. This is a character study of a broken marriage, the wife’s reflection on that while mixed with the grief of loss - complicated emotional exploration.
Kitamura has such a cultivated and polished literary style. I just got swept up in the narrator's many wonderings and anxieties about marriage and death. I felt so deeply inside of her head, with an intimacy that is characteristic of Kitamura's novels. Heavily philosophical about relationships and intentions, about pretenses and desires.
I liked the way this book was written but kind of felt like it wasn't going anywhere and was a little bored during the last third
This one had odd prose, and despite the missing husband I didn't get pulled into the mystery. Major snooze-fest and I am putting it down.
