I have been dying for this prequel since the end of Book 2. The chance to dive into their past lives had me counting down the days and it exceeded every expectation I had. I didn’t think it was possible, but I’m even more obsessed with these characters. And as for Book 3? I need it like yesterday. They deserve the most epic, soulshattering happy ending imaginable I won't accept anything else. Memon is still amazing in this book his confessions towards Roxi had me giggling and blushing. Their "second" wedding scene will forever live in my head. I knew what was coming but it still hurt to read it a second time
How do you truly feel? I ask timidly.
Like I could conquer the world just to lay it all at your feet. His voice turns serious. Roxi, you are my first and last thought each day. I have longed for you more than I care to admit—not just as my friend and confidant but also as my lover and wife and amage.
No, little witch, he finally says. I hear his ominous laugh. You won’t be marrying anyone besides me. His voice is confident and uncompromising. I am coming for you. I will leave tomorrow at first light, and I will get there before a wedding takes place. And when I do, he continues, I will make graves of these grooms and anyone else who comes between us. Violent delight threads his words. You’re mine.
“You flirt with your fucking death when you speak ill of my wife.” Memnon’s voice has deepened with his anger. Wood creaks as he pulls the bowstring taut. “Now, who’s next?”

I really enjoyed getting Roxilana and Memnon’s background and how they found each other. Obviously I knew what to expect at the end because we get this exact ending at the end of book 2 as Selene’s memories return to her. I can’t wait until the next book, where we get to deal with Eislyn.

This was originally supposed to be a novella and honestly it still could have been. I found myself skimming a good chunk of this book because it just wasn’t interesting. Big picture for the series, this wasn’t necessary. We got nothing significantly new out of this. A lot of the middle could have been taken out and just done bigger time jumps. I mean a good portion of this book happened all in the same year.
I liked the beginning when they were separated and would talk to each other through their mind connection. This was really the only time where it felt like they had a real connection. I liked bits and pieces of the middle. Then the end was the most interesting but it was also a complete repeat of the memory we got in the second book. I was hoping for more insight and more detail to play out with the ending. But we just got the memory version all over again.
The impression I got from the two books was this intense, other worldly, love and relationship. But honestly all I got from their relationship in this book was him just being obsessed to the point of ruin and her constantly being against everything he and his people are. If it weren’t for their soul mate bond I’d tell you they are very incompatible. Given the time period, his people being nomadic warriors it’s just very naive to be so against battle and war to the point you shame your husband for doing what is natural and expected. It took forever for her to get something that resembled a backbone but it still wasn’t enough. She internalized too much and didn’t speak up enough.
I definitely prefer Selene over Roxi. Selene is more of a fighter. At least Roxi was reincarnated into a better version of her.
