Gates of Midnight is fast paced and action packed. It has strong characters, a hard hitting story line, and visuals to impress. If you love thrilling graphic novels, this one is for you.

Boy, has it been a while since I've read a graphic novel. Throughout my teen years I went through a manga phase, fascinated by how illustrations and drawings could tell a story with only bits of dialogue. Gates of Midnight happens to be the first graphic novel I have picked in up in over 12 years, and it did not disappoint me. It really captivated me with the art, and the way simple conversations could be so complex and moving.

I loved the main character Raven, and how she was so bad ass, like Buffy, but still had realistic qualities to her. She didn't always win her fights. She suffered from PTSD from being a combat medic, and she was curious about everything. She was quite a strong, like-able character, and I can't wait to see what happens to her.

I enjoyed the action and mayhem in this issue. I was thrown in the thick of it and loved the plot involving another dimension, warriors, and gate keepers. The story had danger, murder, humor, and emotion. I'm already hooked and dying for the next issue!

Thank you to Black Chateau and the publisher for sending me this free copy in exchange for my honest review!

More of a 3.75. I think this wasn’t just the first issue, it was the first 4 put together and by the 4th issue I really started to get into it.
It was a little confusing at first with all the characters. I don’t read many graphic novels so I think they’re harder for me to get into because it’s just pictures and dialogue instead of descriptions.
I loved the art style of this book. I really liked the sepia with pops of color too. I thought that was different and cool.
I really liked the idea of monsters having ka and being able to live in our world without them.
There was a little description at the end of the book which I thought was a really nice addition. I felt like it would have personally helped me more if it was at the beginning but I really did like reading that.
There was also a short about the librarian which was fun. It left a lot of questions unanswered for the next issues.

Love the characters and plot. The main character is a kick-ass lady with an adorable hellhound puppy. The Gatekeeper is an enjoyable gray-area character, and no one knows where his loyalties lie. Even side characters are very well developed and 3D.
