A compelling story, but some challenges with story structure for me
informative medium-paced

This book is a must read! Important historical fiction about abortion, motherhood and a post-war system of taking babies from unwed mothers in Canada.

This book follows the story of three women, whose lives intersect over a tragic story of loss, love and strength. It tracks the underground abortion system that existed prior to legalization in 1988. The characters are treasures and I loved how they each compelled the reader in different ways.

The author’s note is also heartbreaking to learn that most of the events in this story are true and existed in varying capacities. She also notes that over 300,000 women were forced or coerced to give up their babies in Canada, something neither the Canadian government or the Catholic church have ever apologized for.

love!

A page turner for sure. Pulled me almost immediately and kept me going back. One of the most engaging books I’ve read in quite a while.

3.5 rounded up - I’m sad to say I didn’t like this as much as I expected. Of course I loved the message and the content and the portrayal of different views of motherhood, but the last 15-20% was pretty unexciting and lackluster for me. I really enjoyed the first half and the build up of the different story lines, but since it was written in a way that the reader knew more than the characters, I was expecting a bigger reveal and a huge surprising reunion and instead I felt the ending fell flat.
