Looking For Jane

Historical fiction at its finest - and Canadian, to boot. A story about motherhood and choices and empowerment and frustration, and a dark chapter in our nation’s history. I was in Grade 5 when abortion was legalized in Canada, and while that meant very little (nothing) to me then, I have come to understand how big a deal that is, and how much women my age owe to the women - and men - who fought so hard to ensure my generation has choice and control over our own bodies. This book was outstanding.

From the Author’s Note:

“…my pregnancy gave me a deeper understanding of the power and critical importance of bodily autonomy, and perhaps why I feel more strongly about reproductive choice and abortion access than ever. Because I can now put myself in the shoes of the pregnant person who doesn’t want to be pregnant. I can’t imagine how terrifying that could feel for them. Now that I’m a mother, this book and its messages are more real to me than ever before.”

I’ve felt so much anger running through my body lately and this book (and the author’s note) is just adding fuel to the fire. Hope my therapist is ready for our session tomorrow.
