This book is quite extraordinary. I really got invested in the way we navigate a world of prejudice and racism along with an innocent child who is just learning about such things for the first time.

Quite thought-provoking. It also amazes me how a book from the 60s can still be so up-to-date and relevant in its message today

BOOK NOTES:

Justice was blocked by race
Don’t judge character by colour
Judicial system can be bent for good and bad
Representing a black person was enough to be appreciated by black community
Being accepting of Blacks can lead to being discriminated
Evidence did not outweigh prejudice
Shoot all the Blue Jays but never kill a Mockingbird- symbol of innocence
Prejudice led to divisions and pride and stopped expression of emotions
White privilege could be used to maintain reputation at the expense of Blacks
Young people can loose faith in justice system based on verdicts
The youth can also be affected by prejudice

Meandering and kind of one dimensional. Not a fan of the characters or most of the events.

Somehow I made it through 7 years of college (I hold two master's degrees) without ever reading this. In many ways I am glad that I read this now; as an adult in the midst of conversations about racism (sexisms and all the other "isms"). This story not only examines the deadly impact of racism but also gender roles. All from the innocent perspective of a child. I greatly enjoyed this and encourage others that have somehow missed reading this (or if you haven't read it since high school or college) to pick it up and read it again.

I now need to watch the movie (for the first time).
