Fantastic, classic, yes.

Could have done without the ableism and all the god talk, but it’s a nice little story if you ignore those bits.

This was a favourite book of my childhood. I identified closely with Heidi & her relationship with her grandfather. Reading it again brought memories of that closeness back. I left the real world for a time, suspended critical judgement & entered a world where good is rewarded & all is right in the end. I greatly enjoyed revisiting the mountain to find Heidi & Alm Uncle still living happily there.

It is no wonder that this is the most popular Swedish children's and young adult's book of all time. I loved reading this book so much it made me sad to have to stop for any reason. I found the characters easy to relate to and the story well rounded. The book has themes of religion and nature as a healing tool and unclaimed beauty that I felt weren't inappropriate or overpowering to the story. Ms. Spyri made it clear that she felt these were important to her and wanted to share them with the world. The book can be considered "cutsey," but I found this to be a welcomed change from current books of those genre. In a world that has many problems that weigh heavily on our hearts and minds Heidi is a breath of fresh air.

This was probably my first ever proper 300+ full pages of a novel that I've read in my life. I read it at 3rd grade!! I loved it so much at my first every read, and I read it again a few years later, and again just last year! Though, I read the translated version (in Indonesian) so I wouldn't know how it is in English. I should give it a try, though. Maybe I should read it again sometimes !!!
