Heidi / Johanna Spyri

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~ I would a thousand times rather be with grandfather on the mountain than anywhere else in the world.… ~

So, this book has been on my bookshelf for nearly 25 years, and I always intended to read it but alas I didn’t. But now, we have!

I suppose after reading so many dark books lately reading one that’s so happy in its outlook from the beginning was a delight. I almost found myself saying this one is too happy but that’s Heidi. She is who she is.

All characters are changed by her, be it Uncle Alp, Peter, Grannie, Clara, they’re all infuatuated with her and she thrives. Now the book is very Disney Swiss, and a huge religious overtone, but look beyond that and it is a tale of a happy child in her happy place. And nobody would stand in her way.

This is a classic for a reason, and I was charmed by it all. And nothing bad happened to Grannie so the book can stay on the bookshelf.

This is one of the more simple and plain books out there and that definitely adds to its charm. There is no extravagance or over the top descriptions or even particularly long and hard to pronounce words. I think it's best for a bit of light reading or for young children (for them to read or to be read to them). It's a super fun read and will definitely put a smile on your face!

I loved this book as a child and reread it constantly. Along with Pippi Longstocking, Heidi opened my eyes to other ways of living. This was not the edition I owned, which I had been given for a birthday and which was lost when a cellar flooded and boxes of stored books were damaged.

I love Heidi very much, first read it at school in grade 5 and it was very good, I don’t usually read books like Heidi and I found that it was a bit boring in some parts of it but I still loved it

A didn't love when Heidi was sent to Frankfurt and complained a lot about that section. But in the end, we all liked how everything turned out.

While it is an excellent representation of the literary era… nothing happens. There is no conflict. No character development. No real changing of any one’s mind or even actions. Just… loving nature? Goat milk making an invalid girl healthy?

I feel like I owe book club an apology for this one.
