Endearing book about a young girl changing the lives around her with her awe of nature and the beauty she sees in others. It is translated from the original German, so it is a bit choppy, but the story is so sweet that it is worth it. My sister reads this to her 4th+5th grade class, and it is perfect for an 8/9/10 y/o to read independently and be inspired!
Normally I'm a sucker for "kind-hearted orphan enters people's lives and makes everyone happy" plots, but Heidi piety and the preachiness of this book was so obnoxious it lost a few stars for me.
Heidi is a five year old girl, orphaned and living with her Aunt Dete when she is unceremoniously dumped on her grandfather who lives in the mountains of Switzerland. Though her grandfather is gruff and not accustomed to small children, they quickly forge a tight bond and Heidi learns about life in the mountains, until Aunt Dete shows up to disrupt Heidi's life once more. This is a book I've been meaning to read almost my entire life, and have finally found time for.
This is a sweet story about Heidi and her family and friends. It is appropriate for the 5-8 year old crowd, though the chapters may be a bit too long for newly independent readers. It is a level 8 book for Accelerated Readers. The "bad guys" in this book are not really that bad in the grand scheme of things. I really liked this book.

I am not sure how I missed this book growing up, but I am glad I found it now. What a sweet story that just leaves you feeling happy and smiling.
I loved Heidi as a child. I just discovered this gorgeous version that is part of the Penguin in Bloom collection!! And... I had to buy it. Can't wait to get it and re-read this for the first time in at least 15 years.

A joyful story about a little girl finding her tribe set in the Swiss mountains. A very sweet, heartwarming story about the magic of kindness and found families… and goats. Lots of goats.
