This is going to come off as a little precious and preachy if you don't put when it was written into the context. I had avoided this book for years due to my aversion to Shirley Temple, but it was charming enough that I didn't picture ringlets at every turn. The thawing out of the Grandfather is lovely to watch, and the way this character makes everyone's life better (even at the expense of her own happiness, at time) is as uplifting as intended. Will make you want to go to the Swiss mountains.
One of my very favorite children's books. It was one of the first chapter books I read. It made me realize what good writing can do. I can still see scenes from the book in my head.

This is a charming book and really does show the restorative power of being in nature and how we are meant to connect with nature. A beautiful read as an adult or as a child.
