Loved this. I think listening to this on audio enhanced the experience for me--the narrator was fantastic. Her voice was affective and I was able to differentiate all the characters very easily.

Davey is a great character; she's prickly but loving; hurting and angry and desperate to reach out. Her thoughts and experiences felt so authentically teen and surprisingly relevant when one considers this was originally published in the early 80s; it has a timelessness that I think will carry over for many years to come.

This also abstains from delving into melodrama. It's certainly sad and definitely an exploration of griefbut in a beautifully subtle and understated way.

Highly recommended and I can't wait to see the movie!

Of my recent JB reads, this is her best. Finally a character with some interior monologue who thinks and feels. In "shelving" this, I was conflicted because for a moment I thought I'd call it a book for middle schoolers. It's not terribly complex. The issues aren't too dark... And yet they are the ones faced by young adults. While I recognize that sex, alcohol and death are concepts that some MSers may have to navigate, in general, I think they are handled in a more mature way in this book and without a certain amount of knowledge, experience, understanding (all things that come with age) the reader really needs to be YA to appreciate the book. Well done, JB.

Still just as good as an adult as when I was a teenager.

One of my high school favorites I’d forgotten about...it was a pleasure to rediscover this book.

I’ve actually never read this which is surprising given I read most of Judy Blume’s books as a kid and adolescent. It was a good one. Not my favorite by her but definitely solid. I also loved the setting seeing as how it takes place in my state and I could visualize places that were mentioned and could relate to a lot of the remarks made.

I read this book over 10 years ago and I still remember it. It was excellent.

Man. Way to kill fond childhood memories. When I was 7-9, I LOVED Judy Blume. Loved. I kind of graduated from her to adult fiction because there just wasn't much out there that was called YA. And so this year I was all, "I'm totally going to reread some of my favorite childhood books." Reading this has kind of killed that idea. It was painful to read. "Wow," he said. "Yes," she said. "whoa", he said. "yes," she said. This isn't from the book, it's an example, but that's the sentence structure. No wonder I stopped reading this stuff when I was 9.

I felt like I needed to read this book (sort of like how I felt about Go Ask Alice). Plus I wanted to see the movie. It was an okay book. Nothing spectacular.
