The plot twist was unexpected so I’ll give it 2 stars for that. The main character is absolutely horrible and hard to relate to or even like. Even considering her trauma there is nothing that offers the reader the desire to empathize with her. It comes off very shallow, entitled and bitchy through the tone of the entire book including nearly every character introduced. It is very slow to start and almost didn’t finish it at all. It takes a slight veer towards interesting about halfway through. I also will say because of the attitude of the book I didn’t hate the ending completely, though I think it was too quick to just abruptly end and left several threads without closure. I am curious if I will enjoy the movie more than I did the book.
I bought this book a few months ago, before all the Netflix hype. I was hesitant back then, because the reviews were all over the place.
On one hand, the beginning was so slow that by the time it began picking up, I was already a little checked out. I struggled a lot with connecting with adult Ani and her relationships with everyone in her life just seemed so superficial. But on the other hand, I was really locked in with Ani's 14-year-old perspective and definitely could relate to all the emotions she was feeling being the new girl at school and wanting to fit in with the popular crowd.
I think I would have enjoyed this one a lot more had it been two different books, since it felt like two separate plots joined into one. But then again, it's hard to say "enjoy" when the plot was partially based on Knoll's own experiences.
!!! there are a great deal of trigger warnings including rape, body image issues, eating disorders, gun violence, murder, PTSD.

It started slow for me but when this book takes a twist... Holy hell... it takes a twist. I can admit that I never saw it coming. Get thee to a therapist, stat!
I kept waiting for the twist. For that hold my breath, what did I just read moment. It never happened. The book kept my interest, but I was so disappointed in the ending.

I really did not like this at first but it ended up growing on me by the end. the characters are all deeply flawed and I do wish tifani had been fleshed out a bit more, but you can understand why she is the way she is. major trigger warning for sexual assault and gun violence which I wish I had known before reading this just to mentally prepare! it was well-written overall though and I liked tifani's ending.
Graphic: Gun violence, Mass/school shootings
Moderate: Rape
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good but only kept reading because I’d seen the movie and knew it was juicy. Maybe watching the movie first ruined it by taking away a lot of the suspense which the story relied on to move forward. My b
This book was... weird. I found it incredibly hard to finish because I was quite bored. TifAni was annoying, glib, and so self-righteous. Not someone I wanted to "hear" talk.
Warning- this book talks about a lot of tough topics.

This book has been compared to 'Gone Girl' but it's more like 'The Girl on the Train' because the main character is not particularly likable, and her role in a tragedy is only slowly revealed. Although slightly unpleasant, this story is definitely hard to put down.
