a story about freedom, food and connection, all the characters are deeply unlovable in a way that makes you reflect on the same ugliness we all hold within us in some form

the concept of the supper club is unique, revolutionary and yet still somehow entirely privileged. Lara Williams does a good job of unpacking this, both within their characters and in the nuances of supper club operations.

This book is literally like fight club for women.
Read from the Provo library.

great story about friendships, loneliness and womanhood. love the centrality of food and feminist themes throughout. A very ‘me’ book

Don’t read this one on an empty stomach, as the food descriptions are absolutely sensational, the star of the book honestly. It’s very sad white girl lit but leans heavily into it - both the MC and the author seem aware of their privileges. It asks questions about how women can take up space, push back against their prescribed roles, and whether something is just a performance or having a true impact. Check the content warnings on it though, as it gets heavy, and maybe steer clear if you’re frustrated by self-destructive characters.

there’s so much to say here and i’m not entirely sure how to put it into words. the author really tries to bring home the ‘feminist’ aspect of the supper club but it falls really flat, and acts as though it’s saying something profound about weight when it’s not. parts of this story really shine and speak to the yearning women have to feel full, but for the most part it’s just kind of insulting and dare i say boring? an interesting premise but poorly executed in my opinion

this took me way long to finish!!!!

5 stars for some of those sentences, ffuuuuck. i was about to start levitating. all those things about taking space, taking expectations and hopes of others and what society puts on you and existing for yourself (even through the trauma that takes you to crawl into the edges of other people’s shadows and taking all of their hurt and grief and anger and mirroring it on yourself.)

i could have just read those parts over and over. definitely altered some brain chemistries there

yes the mc might not be doing nice things but what happened to understanding that characters can be humane and therefore sometimes insufferable and feeling and fearful and driven by their trauma and past? lol

This books sucks. It sucks so bad that I hope no one ever attempts to read it. If you want to hate someone, Roberta is the perfect character because she has very little redeeming qualities, so little that I can’t even think of something nice to say about her right now. This book has random inserts of sexual thoughts that DO NOT fit in with the previous thought accompanying it. Seriously, Lara Williams must have thought of every negative stereotype that effects women and decided to reinforce them rather than diminish them. These women have so much potential to be utilized in this story and they just aren’t. It makes you wonder what their point even is, which probably just boils down to them being “diversity” points.
