My habit of disregarding trigger warnings before starting a book caught me off guard with this one. I chose “The Dead Romantics” by Ashley Poston on the second anniversary of my father’s passing. Instead of opting for a different book, I persevered and couldn’t put it down.
Not only was it a heartwarming and cozy romance, but it exemplified the essence of a great book—it lingered in my mind long after I finished it. It felt like divine intervention that I chose to read this book on this particular day. We all will eventually confront the trauma of losing someone we love, and I’m grateful that this book provided me with solace during one more challenging day.
One of my favorite quotes encapsulates my feelings: “I’d always written how grief was hollow. How it was a vast cavern of nothing. But I was wrong. Grief was the exact opposite. It was full and heavy and drowning because it wasn’t the absence of everything you lost—it was the culmination of it all, your love, your happiness, your bittersweets, wound tight like a knotted ball of yarn.”

really really lovely gorgeous exploration of grief and love and sappy romance books. love this author note as well which is weird but fun
I freaking adored this book.
This was not only so cute but it really focused on grief and emotions and family connections. I am honestly blown away! I saw somebody compare this writing style to Emily Henry’s and I completely agree!
Totally gives Emily Henry vibes except with ghosts!
This is my favorite romance I’ve read in a while.
