“I'd always written how grief was hollow. How it was a vast cavern of nothing. But I was wrong. Grief was the exact opposite. It was full and heavy and drowning because it wasn't the absence of everything you lost - it was the combination of it all, your love, your happiness, your bittersweets, wound tight like a knotted ball of yarn.”

This book was special. Ashley Poston seamlessly integrated two plots, with an endearing romance and an incredibly profound message of grief. I honestly can’t decide what kept me turning the pages: the tenderness between Benji and Florence or the family dynamics and their grief that pulls them back together.

Florence was a character that is easily relatable. Life has knocked her down leaving her stagnant - unable to find success in the career she loves and struggling to believe in the magic of happily ever afters. This book is about prioritizing and putting things into perspective: living for the here and now, following your own heart.

“There is no happy ending, theres just. . .happily living. As best you can.”

The romance in “The Dead Romantics” was so gentle and vulnerable. Both Benji and Florence are facing life-shattering challenges, and the way they show up for each other is achingly pure.

“I knew you once,” he said so ardently, it made my heart flutter.
“I think you still do,” I whispered.

This book will linger with me fondly for a long time, until I find myself returning to the first page once more.

“Everything died, but pieces of it remained. Dad was in the wind because he breathed the same air that I breathed. Dad was a mark in history because he existed. He was part of my future because I still carried on.”

Absolutely loved!!! I wasn’t too sure if I’d like it based on the description. I thought it would be overly cheesy and while I like cheesy sometimes, I wasn’t sure I was in the right mood for it. But the cover kept calling to me so I thought I’d give it a go. I’m so glad I did!!!

From the first time Florence and Ben meet through the end, I wanted to know how their story would work. Without giving too much away, I will say I figured out pretty quickly what was going on each time Ben disappeared, but that didn’t dim the magic of the story for me. There’s a piece of Florence I could easily identify with. That bit of weirdness growing up in a home that wasn’t like everyone else’s, escaping through books and stories, finding love and throwing herself into it even when it was with someone who was clearly a selfish asshole (we’ve all been there right?!?). She’s the kind of heroine that I think most of us can identify with. I loved the journey Florence takes from being afraid to love again, to realizing she’s always had love from the people in her life. I found myself totally immersed in the narrative and cheering for Florence in every discovery she made that gave her strength.

I laughed, I cried, I got super pissed off in places. And overall I just adored the feeling of hope that this book left me with. It was such a good read.

Lovely well written book. Ghost writer who can talk to ghosts is a really neat idea. The way the author also approaches death and grief is both emotionally damaging and yet wholly accurate.

I will caution to anyone that is part of the “Dead parent club” to tread carefully. There are sections in the book that are going to hit home and too close to it.

This was punny and I loved it. Where mourning and love meet. It’s great.

This book was a beautiful love story. It felt like a hug from your dad when your life is falling apart. I cried 3 times reading this and also laughed and lost my breath a few times. The romance in this book is soft and exactly what it needs to be. If the romance was any pushier or rougher it wouldn’t have fit Benji and Florence’s story.
What Lee did was so wrong and distasteful and heartbreaking. Since Flor is a writer I can imagine it’s equally as painful.
This book was beautiful to me and made me feel so sad but not in a tragic “I hate this book” way. Just made me wonder about my own life and how I see the people I lost in my life. The idea of a passing life being a celebration has one I have always embraced but his funeral with the balloons and party hats was beautiful, funny, and well tragic just like I keep saying.
The authors discussions notes at the end of my book is what made me cry one final time before I closed this book.
I will read this book again in a heartbeat, thank you Ash.

“Florence’s dad said that the people we love are in the wind and I believe it. I think, that the people we love can be found in the pages of books too. I hope you find yourself in a book someday.
And I hope that book lives forever.” - Ashley Poston

So much about this book screamed “perfect transition into fall!”

Reminiscent of the Addams family in a way I was NOT expecting, The Dead Romantics follows our main character, Florence Day. Florence, a romance (ghost)writer New York City, believes romance is absolutely dead after dealing with heartbreak post-breakup. Already feeling like a failure and completely down in the dumps, life throws another curveball her way; Florence is forced to travel back to her small hometown after her father passes away unexpectedly and is forced to confront the demons that pushed her to leave in the first place.

To be totally honest, the synopsis on the back of the book did NOT do this book Justice. There is so, so much to this story that made me fall in absolutely love with the writing and characters. I am a BIG fan of Florence and find her to be so freaking relatable and I absolutely loved the whole dynamic she had with her entire family. I don’t want to spoil any of those surprises for you, but this is a must read for sure. Perfect for fall!

I wasn’t sure about it at first but I ended up enjoying it when I realized a happily ever after was possible!
