3.5 stars. A weird, but interesting story. Was there a point? Maybe not. It reminds me a little of Dawn by Elie Weisel. I don’t regret reading it, but I’m not sure I would read it again.

I.B. Singer was not a Holocaust survivor, but he lived among them and knew them well. In this book, as in many of his other fictions, the Holocaust is the ultimate proof that God does not exist. Herman Broder may still go through the motions of Jewish ritual, but his faith and joy in life are both dead. His hopping between three women is not the sexual revolution, it is a symptom of PTSD. As a vegan, he also can't escape the feeling that people are doing to animals every day what the Nazis did to the Jews. While there are a few repetitive and meandering parts to this short novel, it is nonetheless a compelling portrait of survivor guilt. All of the main characters are carefully distinguished and their relationships are convincing. While there are real life Holocaust survivors who are more resilient than these characters, one can't fault Singer for the existential despair that many were feeling in the postwar years.

Surprising and revelatory, yet carefully crafted and somehow grounded in reality; remarkable, specific moment with particular people yet universal; eye-opening, disturbing, satisfying.

A really great tragicomedy. What a tragedy that there is no god and no reliable morality in this world, and what a comedy we create when we lean into that fact.

Absolutely spineless, unserious main character who juggles a number of women and affairs while continually angsting about the situations he puts himself in, all of which pale in comparison to the echoes of the Holocaust in the people around him.

Interesting, persistent comparisons between Nazis' treatment of Jews and humans' treatment of animals.
