This is my first gothic horror novel and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It's also my first read by V.E. Schwab and I wasn't disappointed in her writing style. I'm very excited to read more of her novels that I have.
I love the fact that illustrations were added both because it does a lot for the readers and the world building but also plot wise they are very meaningful. The journal Grace kept and how it folds into the plot with the images was just excellently done. I wanted more of the Dad and Deaths backstory but it's something I can forgive.
Another surprise for me was the pacing given the small amount of dialogue since Olivia our main character isn't able to talk. It never felt slow or overly reliant on the imagery or giving plot details to early. Her power and origin I found to be very interesting and Death as a characters role I thought was well done and not predictable.
I do wish we got more of Mathew and Olivia working together and bonding to make his death more impactful at the end. That being said I do love the ending and seeing Olivia make herself the home she always wanted.

Ik vond dit echt een prachtig verhaal.
We volgen Olivia, een jonge wees, die een brief ontvangt van een lang verloren oom met de boodschap terug naar huis te keren. Oliva kan haar geluk niet op, want ze heeft nooit een thuis gehad en ze verlangt naar een plek waar ze geliefd is en geaccepteerd wordt. Helaas lijkt haar nieuwe thuis een duister geheim te bevatten.
De geleidelijke opbouw, de overgang van het weeshuis naar Olivia's familiehuis. Het familiegeheim dat we langzaam onderzoeken. De proza voelde als een dans. Het verhaal is vrij donker, maar ik heb echt genoten van de lichte horror vibe.
Olivia is een lief personage. Ze is koppig en intelligent. Olivia heeft mutisme en kan daardoor niet praten. Zij communiceert middels gebarentaal en schrift. Ik waardeerde hoe de auteur beschreef hoe andere mensen reageerden op haar beperking en hoe Olivia daarmee om gaat.
Ik heb enkel lof gehoord over het werk van V.E. Schwab, en voor een keer moet ik het eens zijn met de hype.

I preordered a signed copy knowing I was going to love whatever story V.E. Schwab conjured. And still it soared far beyond my expectations. There’s truly no feeling like the one when you’re reading a book and have the thought, ‘I think this is the best book I’ve ever read.’ And Gallant did that for me. It brought back so much childhood nostalgia and magic, and sent me back to the first time I read Neil Gaiman’s Coraline as a kid. Haunting, terrifying, magical, moving. Gallant is a timeless, beautifully written story that damn well nearly brought me to tears in the end. It’s everything I wanted it to be and more. Thank you, V.E. Schwab, for finally breaking my reading slump.
