Half listened to this as an audiobook and then read the kindle version for the rest and I definitely think this is a book you should listen to.
This book is very atmospheric heavy and has very little dialogue between characters, which makes the audiobook better.
However I just found it was missing something and I was pretty much bored for the first 75% of it. I feel like the ending was rushed when nothing happened in the rest of the book.
I did like the ghouls and death concept and would have liked to seen more of it.
However no doubt that Schwab's descriptive writing is phenomenal.

This book has solid merits for much of its runtime. Schwab is really good at crafting atmosphere and intrigue with the mystery and the journey the main character embarks on. It's very creative in its execution and what's present bleeds a distinct style. However, this book is an idea unfinished. So much time is spent slowly building up intrigue and suspense only for it to be squandered in a rushed last act and unsatisfactory ending. Its just a very stark departure from the rest of the book.

Maybe this book just wasn't for me. I loved the premise, the illustrations, and the beautiful writing. But other than that things fell flat. I feel like it was 270 pages of minimal build up and then 60 pages of action. Idk, the characters and plot just weren't great.
This is also my first Schwab book, so maybe I'm just not used to her writing.

More of a 3.5 rounded up, but I enjoyed it. It's got all the pieces of a good ghost story, though feels like it's borrowing too much from other, stronger works to be truly unique (mainly Crimson Peak, Ocean At The End of The Lane, and Coraline). I did like the second half of the story better than the first half, and the main character is fantastic.
