More of a 3.5 rounded up, but I enjoyed it. It's got all the pieces of a good ghost story, though feels like it's borrowing too much from other, stronger works to be truly unique (mainly Crimson Peak, Ocean At The End of The Lane, and Coraline). I did like the second half of the story better than the first half, and the main character is fantastic.
This was my first time reading the author and it was such a discovery. I really liked the story and the writing style: I was absolutely hooked at the beginning and I couldn’t put the book down. I loved how descriptive it is and it makes it very easy to follow and get into the plot.
Nevertheless, the story loses strength towards the end and it didn’t get me as much. If it had gone on a different direction, it definitely would have had my 5 stars.

2 stars. Beautifully written and super creepy in its tone and atmosphere but the story and characters were weak and left no impression on me whatsoever and that is extremely rare for a Schwab book. I never did really connect with this book. I saw it being compared to Neil Gaiman. Thee Neil Gaiman and yeah, no. Nowhere near. The pacing of this was awful. Nothing happens until damn near the end. Speaking of the end it felt so rushed and anticlimactic. I’m just disappointed in this book. I really enjoy Schwab’s work but this one completely missed the mark for me.
Ok. First this should be said. “No” is a complete sentence. Most books, especially this one wouldn’t take place if the characters simply take NO as a complete sentence. However and I’m starting to dislike this, but the neediness. The painful need to want to show people, “ you could handle stuff” is a bit of a bore now. In the book she was specifically told NOT TO DO SOMETHING. NOT TO GO SOMEWHERE. By multiple people. I think she was overly selfish. “ xyz wouldn’t have happen if they told me about it” NOOOO HOE. They told you NO. You went diggin and fuk shit up. I liked the family story line. I even would go as far as saying I liked the story I just didn’t like the steps we took to get there. My first V.E. SCHWAB, I’ll give her another try.
Victoria's books are always slow to start, and then DESTROY you at the end
