I adore most things written by Schwab, and was not disappointed by this book. The writing is hauntingly beautiful, the message is clear, and the premise is captivating.

Death is a part of you, can infect your memories and dreams, can drive you to madness if you let it. Life and Death are on opposite sides of the same coin, and you cannot have one without the other. This is the story of imbalance and the fight to keep the imbalance in check. This is the story of a 14 year old orphan girl, and what it means to find family, find power, and find a voice.

My only issue was that some of the pacing was off. It went from really slow in the beginning, to wrapping it up quickly in the end. But, overall, I think the story was everything I had hoped for with the premise.

“Free — a small word for such a magnificent thing.
I don’t know what it feels like, but I want to find out.”

One thing that V.E. Schwab does amazingly is worldbuilding. This is only my second book by her; the first being The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (one of my top faves), which sets an incredibly high bar that I'm not sure can be topped.
However, this book drew me in from the very beginning and kept me so hooked that I finished it in less than a day... I just wish there would have been a grander final conclusion with all the mystery leading up to the ending.

Anyways, Gallant is fascinating. Full of ghosts, haunted houses that could be homes, and a silent girl who refuse to be quiet or stay still, it's a gothic tale that keeps you mesmerized from page one all the way to the end, brimming with imagination and beautiful words.
