I'm a huge fan of Schwab's so let's dive into the highlights. I particularly enjoy what some may find slow—a skillful, gradual story buildup—and the portrayal of an "unlikeable" main character, a Schwab trademark. While familiar themes persist, such as life and death, the narrative begs for fresh exploration. Nonetheless, the rounded story, though perhaps a touch too neat for my taste, is beautifully executed from start to finish. The stunning illustrations breathe life into the words, enhancing the reading experience, especially with the spine-tingling horror elements. Ultimately, it's a visually captivating and beautifully crafted novel that beckons to be admired, even if just for its aesthetic appeal.

this really missed the mark for me. why did it take over 50% of the book for the plot to progress? probably because every sentence had to have a minimum of 27 adjectives. I love ve schwabs writing but this felt almost like a ghost writer under the guise of schwab. the plot was fine for a ya book but there was no reason it needed to read like that.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the format of it where some pages were journal entries and some were drawings.

the book had mysterious and spooky vibes, and the ending was bittersweet.

I also liked that the MC is mute and uses sign language.
