The Dilemma

3.27 AVERAGE

Rating: 2 Stars.

How did anyone give this over 3 stars? I do not understand what i am missing!

As said by previous reviewers, this book's 'Dilemma' would have been solved by having a Conversation! Seriously! If they sat down and talked for a few minutes, there would be no book and we would all have been spared reading this book!

Way harsh, I know, but seriously! Go into this knowing this and you'll be fine.

I love the unique way this one was written. Many secrets and many players and you never know how it will all end.

1.5 stars.

I have enjoyed books by B.A. Paris in the past, but this one was not for me. Different from her previous works, this could be considered a family-drama. Unfortunately, the plot was weak and the characters were boring and uninspired. Whole sections were highly repetitive, unnecessarily re-presenting 'the dilemma'. I only finished (skimming the last chapters) because I hoped there would be a twisty payoff at the end. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

On the positive side, the author is an excellent writer and it was a very easy and quick read - could be a nice distraction for those that enjoy simple family-dramas. I look forward to the author's next book.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and B.A. Paris for my advanced copy to read and review.

I must start this review by saying that B.A. Paris is one of my favorite authors!!! However, this was my least favorite book of hers..

I had initially heard that this book would be quite different than a typical B.A. Paris book and the rumors were true.

It was still a very gripping read, however, it wasn’t your typical psychological thriller. I would categorize more as general fiction to be honest which I don’t particularly love.

The premise was more about a family keeping secrets from each other and how that unfolds.

I also had a hard time liking the characters and/or having sympathy for them. I just wanted to scream TELL THEM THE SECRETS AND LET’S MOVE ON. At 50% I really kind of had enough of the back and forth and just wanted to be done with the book.

There was still a small element of mystery, as we had to uncover what the numerous secrets were, and that’s why it’s a 4 star for me. Overall, if you like general fiction you will most likely love this book. If you are an avid fan of mystery and thrillers, you might not enjoy this one as much as the previous novels.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for providing me with an ARC of this book. As usual, my reviews are my honest and unbiased opinions

I'm a huge B.A. Paris fan and I'm SO sad I didn't connect to this one. Yes, I did go in knowing it wasn't going to be her typically thriller style and would be more of a family drama.

It's Liv's 40th birthday and she's been planning a massive party for months! The only downside is her daughter isn't going to be able to make it, but Liv is also somewhat relieved because of a secret she's been keeping for months. Her husband Adam wants Liv's party to go smoothly, but he's got a big unbearable truth that he needs to tell her when her party is finished.

I liked the writing style. Paris has an amazing way to write in a way that hooks you.

I didn't like the characters. I thought that Liv and Adam were unbearable. I'm not sure why Liv chose her 40th birthday to be a massive celebration and the entire celebration is fueled by her still being mad about not having a big wedding 20 years earlier. I couldn't connect to Adam either and found it annoying that he couldn't connect to his child.

There were a lot of small miscommunications in this story that over time got bigger and bigger.

I've heard from multiple mom's that this story is believable and moms work really hard to keep the peace in a family. Maybe I couldn't connect because I'm not a mom? Who knows.

This was a really good thriller read coming out 2020 and very fast paced read too so defo recommended. It is about a family that all have dilemmas to try and work out throughout the book and I liked the writing style and just how it makes you think what would you do? I liked and disliked the characters throughout but I read late into the night.

This book...where do I begin. I believe it could’ve been more of a short story or shorter book than it actually is. I felt it was very dragged on. And the communication, or lack there of, between Livia and Adam is ridiculous. As to not give too much away about the book, I was let down by this one and have my fingers crossed that the next one will be better

This author always comes with rave reviews and as always she did not disappoint. The Dielmma takes place over the course of one day, and what a day it is. It is a fast paced ride as you are taken along by different POV from the characters, uncovering secrets that could and will rock the whole family. I read this in one sitting and it will be one of my top rated books for the month and possibly the year.

The book focuses on Livia's 40th birthday and all the plans that she has for it, plans she has made for years and years. But she is keeping secrets and so is her husband Adam...the question is are the same secrets or is one worse than the other? Will their daughter Marnie be the end of the family as they know it? Both of them must make decisions on how to tell each other these secrets all in the midst of the party. What comes out will leave you rocked.

Make sure you grab this book and after this one, all the others they have written.

In The Dilemma by B.A. Paris, Livia is keeping a terrible secret from her husband Adam about their nineteen-year-old daughter Marnie. She wants to tell him, but the timing has never seemed right. Now it is the day of Livia's extravagant fortieth birthday party that has been in the works for the past two decades. Once it is over, then she really will tell him. Unfortunately, Adam has a secret of his own and keeping it to himself to prevent ruining Livia's big day just may kill him.

This book had plenty of suspense and it kept me turning the pages, but at some point near the end, it became too much for me. The author may have wanted to keep the reader hooked a little longer, but it nearly made me stop reading. Spit it out already! Once she did, it was emotional, but I've never liked the trope in which someone needs to tell someone else something important, but doesn't, causing all kinds of conflict and confusion. It annoys me.

If you are better at sitting on the edge of your seat than I am, you'll probably really like this book. Families are messy and when children become adults, parents have to accept that their children may make decisions they wish they didn't. Those make for very interesting themes and for that I enjoyed reading this book.
