This may be just a me thing, I feel like the target audience is much younger than I had previously thought (I'm in my mid-twenties). It was pretty easy to follow, and frustratingly simple and predictable at times. It was a lovely re-telling, if gruesome at times. The MC was really annoying at first, and I didn't recognize much development in her until much later in the story-- still, it felt like she was the same from beginning to end, with marginal differences in development. Good read for a younger audience.

I don't know whether this is technically a four-star book, but it pleasantly surprised me and I had a lot of fun so that's what it's getting (except five minutes later I've booted it down to 3.75). It was a fairly quick read, and kept me engaged the entire time. I really liked the main character Sophia; she was badass and took what she wanted, and had clear character growth throughout the book. I loved how clearly she communicated with everyone throughout this book - I hate the miscommunication trope so much and this was practically the opposite of that. I liked the romance between her and Constance, even if it was a little bland sometimes it's just nice to read an uncomplicated romance, and it's always nice to see lesbian rep. The plot was fairly basic but enjoyable and engaging, and there were definitely some twists I didn't expect! As a retelling it worked quite nicely as well, I've never seen a retelling where the source material is history within the book. I had a few issues with the villain, who's motives weren't very clear and seemed to keep changing, but from what I could gather was a mixture of extreme sexism stemming from being denied once and wanting to live for a really long time? Overall not the best book, but good for a fun, quick read with a splattering of badass feminist lesbians.

Amazing book that explores hard hitting current issues like misogyny and domestic abuse, it showcases tyranny, injustice and oppression and how they're overcome. Beautiful feminist literature which sets a great example for young girls/women.
